About National Museum of Death

The Museo Nacional de la Muerte is housed in an old colonial building one block from the Plaza de la Patria and belongs to the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes. The collection began with the works of printmaker Octavio Bajonero Gil and now brings together thousands of pieces showing how Mexicans represent death.

The rooms range from pre-Hispanic figures of death deities to colonial paintings and sculptures, the prints of José Guadalupe Posada, and folk art skulls made of paper, clay and sugar. There are also altars and objects related to the Day of the Dead.

The museum helps explain why death appears with humor and color in the November celebrations and in Mexican handicrafts.
