About Wisconsin Dells Canyons

The dells are the canyons the Wisconsin River carved into the sandstone over thousands of years, with cliffs up to about 30 meters, islets and side gorges. The Ho-Chunk peoples, who live in the region, have their own stories about the river’s formation, and the landscape was publicized in the late 19th century by photographer Henry Hamilton Bennett.

The Upper Dells tour, north of the dam, goes upriver and makes onshore stops at Witches Gulch, a narrow gorge traversed by a wooden walkway, and at Stand Rock, a stone column where Bennett photographed a man leaping across the gap. The shorter Lower Dells tour passes formations such as the Rocky Islands.

There are also amphibious vehicle tours that enter the water and run along the forest trails.
