About American Players Theatre
The American Players Theatre was founded in 1979 on a forested hill near Spring Green and has become one of the best-known classical theaters in the United States. The main stage, outdoors, is an amphitheater of about a thousand seats surrounded by trees, where performances begin in the evening light and end under the stars.
The program mixes Shakespeare, Greek tragedies, comedies and authors such as Chekhov, Ibsen, Shaw and American playwrights. A second, smaller covered stage hosts more intimate productions.
Many audience members arrive early to picnic at the site’s tables before the performance.
