About Jamestown Settlement

Jamestown Settlement is a history museum run by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, about 2 km from the original site. It recreates the early English colony and the cultures that met there: the Powhatan Indigenous peoples, the English, and Africans.

On the James River pier are replicas of the ships Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery, which brought the colonists in 1607. Visitors can board them and see what the voyage was like. Beside them, a replica of the fort contains houses, a church, and a storehouse, and a Powhatan village shows woven houses and daily-life activities.

Interpreters in period clothing demonstrate crafts such as canoe building, food preparation, blacksmithing, and the use of historical weapons. Indoor galleries have exhibits about England, Africa, and Powhatan territory in the early 17th century.

The museum is open year-round and is one of the most popular attractions for families with children.
