About Mount Washington Auto Road

The Mount Washington Auto Road opened in 1861 as a carriage road and is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the United States. It is about 12.2 km from the base in the Pinkham Notch valley at 465 meters to the summit parking at about 1,870 meters. The average grade is nearly 12%, with tight turns and sections without guardrails.

The climb begins in forests of maples and birches and, around halfway, rises above the tree line into a landscape of rocks, tundra and lichens. There are pullouts to stop and look over the valley, the Presidential Range and the Great Gulf, a large glacial cirque beside the road.

Those who don’t want to drive can ride guided vans that depart from the base with drivers who explain the mountain’s history and nature. Drivers receive the bumper sticker that has become a local tradition.

In winter the road is closed to the public above the tree line, and guided snow vehicle tours are offered to parts of the mountain.
