About Flume Gorge
Flume Gorge was discovered in 1808 by Jess Guernsey, a 93-year-old local woman who fished in the area. It is a natural fissure about 240 meters long at the base of Mount Liberty, with granite walls 21 to 27 meters high and only 4 to 6 meters wide. Mosses and ferns coat the damp walls.
The gorge formed when a dike of volcanic rock, weaker than the surrounding granite, was worn away by water and ice. Flume Brook runs along the floor, and a wooden boardwalk attached to the walls takes visitors from one end to the other, up to Avalanche Falls above.
The full loop, about 3 km, starts at the visitor center, passes a covered wooden bridge and Table Rock (a granite slab where water flows), climbs through the gorge and returns through the forest, passing the natural pool called The Pool and bridges over the river.
The gorge is open from early May to late October with timed-entry tickets. In winter the trail is closed because of ice.
