About Philipsburg Manor

Philipsburg Manor reconstructs the center of a large colonial estate that belonged to the Philipse family, merchants of New York, in the 18th century. It was a farm and a trading post, with a water-powered mill on the Pocantico stream where wheat was ground and shipped to New York and the Caribbean.

The site is dedicated to telling the history of the enslaved people who lived and worked there: around 1750, there were 23 Africans and their descendants. It is one of the earliest open-air museums in the United States focused on slavery in the North, where it persisted until the early 19th century.

On the guided tour you visit the stone house, the kitchen, the fields and the mill, which is operated again for demonstrations. Costumed interpreters demonstrate daily tasks such as cooking, spinning and caring for the farm animals.

The Philipsburg Manor visitor center is also the starting point for other tours run by the preservation organization that cares for the region’s historic houses.
