About Lyndhurst Mansion

Lyndhurst was designed in 1838 by architect Alexander Jackson Davis for William Paulding, a former mayor of New York, and completed in 1842. The stone house, with towers, pointed windows and crenellated roofs, was one of the first major neogothic residences in the United States and was once nicknamed "Paulding’s Folly."

The second owner, merchant George Merritt, doubled the size of the house in the 1860s. In 1880 it was purchased by Jay Gould, one of the richest men in the country, who lived there until his death in 1892. His daughters maintained the property, and Anna Gould donated it in 1961 to a national preservation foundation that opened it to the public.

Guided tours cover rooms with original furniture, stained glass, paintings and the upstairs art gallery. Special tours include the tower, which looks over the widest part of the river, and the service areas.

The park, about 27 hectares in an English landscape style, has lawns, old trees, a rose garden and paths that descend to the Hudson’s edge, with views of the bridge that crosses the river nearby.
