About Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery opened in 1849 under a different name and adopted its current name in 1865. Washington Irving, one of its founders, is buried there in a simple family plot. It covers about 36 hectares of wooded hills and valleys along the Pocantico Creek in a cemetery-park style.
Among the graves and mausoleums are those of industrialist Andrew Carnegie, William Rockefeller (brother of John D. Rockefeller), Walter Chrysler, founder of the car company, Elizabeth Arden and Brooke Astor. The stone mausoleums, in varied styles, form a museum of funerary architecture.
Next to it, but separate, is the Old Dutch Church cemetery; the stone church was built at the end of the 17th century by Dutch settlers and is still used for services. It was in this church and cemetery that Irving set The Legend of Sleepy Hollow; the wooden bridge over the creek associated with the legend by visitors was built much later.
The cemetery is open every day, and guided tours run part of the year, including lantern-lit night tours in October.
