About Brandywine Museum of Art

The Brandywine Museum of Art opened in 1971 in a 19th-century grist mill on the banks of the Brandywine River in Chadds Ford. The brick building gained a glass annex with views of the river and the woodlands that appear in the region’s paintings.

The collection is known for works by three generations of the Wyeth family: N. C. Wyeth, an early 20th-century illustrator of adventure books; Andrew Wyeth, a painter of the landscapes and people of Chadds Ford and Maine; and Jamie Wyeth, Andrew’s son. The museum also brings together American illustration and valley landscapes.

In season, the museum organizes guided tours, with a separate fee, to N. C. Wyeth’s house and studio, Andrew Wyeth’s studio, and the Kuerner Farm, the setting for many paintings. Tours depart by bus from the museum and have limited capacity.

Outside, a trail follows the river and the native-plant gardens that surround the building.
