About Theodore Roosevelt National Park — South Unit

The South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park begins at the Medora exit and occupies the badlands along the Little Missouri River. The Scenic Loop Drive, about 58 km long, winds past striped hills, overlooks, and prairie fields, with colonies of prairie dogs beside the road.

Herds of bison and bands of wild horses are often seen along the road, as are deer and eagles. Short trails at Wind Canyon, which overlooks a bend in the river, and Buck Hill, the highest point in the unit, show the landscape from above, and the Petrified Forest trail leads to petrified logs.

Behind the Medora visitor center is the Maltese Cross cabin, a log cabin where Roosevelt lived on his first ranch, furnished with period pieces and his personal belongings.
