About Painted Canyon
Painted Canyon is an overlook on the rim of the badlands, next to I‑94 east of Medora, and is the first park view for visitors arriving by road. From above, the canyon displays layers of clay, sandstone, and lignite in shades of beige, gray, red, and black, with trees on the slopes and prairie on the floor.
The colors change through the day and with the weather, and after rain the tones deepen. Bison often descend the canyon slopes, and a short trail drops from the rim into the landscape.
A small visitor center operates at the overlook during the summer season, offering park information.
