About Chateau de Mores State Historic Site

The Château de Mores was built in 1883 by the Marquis de Mores, a French aristocrat who founded Medora and tried to establish a refrigerated meatpacking operation there to ship beef in refrigerated cars to eastern cities. The 26‑room wooden house stood on a hill across the river, overlooking the town.

Today it is a state historic site, with original furniture, clothing, dishes, and personal items of the couple and their frontier life, including hunts and travels. Guided tours tell the story of the marquis, his wife Medora von Hoffman, who gave the town her name, and the failure of the meatpacking enterprise.

Next to the house a visitor center has exhibits, and the brick smokestack of the old meatpacking plant can still be seen near town.
