About Hemingway Memorial

Ernest Hemingway first visited Sun Valley in 1939 at the invitation of the resort and wrote part of For Whom the Bell Tolls there. He returned many times to hunt and fish and, in 1959, bought a house in Ketchum, where he lived until his death in 1961.

The memorial sits beside Trail Creek, east of Ketchum, at a spot where the writer used to walk. A bronze bust on a stone pillar is inscribed with an excerpt from the funeral eulogy he wrote for a friend, which speaks of autumn in the valley.

Hemingway is buried in the Ketchum cemetery, next to his wife, Mary. The house where he lived is owned by a local organization and is not open to the general public. A bike path runs past the memorial.
