About Old Rag
Old Rag is a granite mountain that stands out east of the main ridge of Shenandoah National Park. The ascent to the summit, at roughly 1,000 meters elevation, is one of the best-known hikes in the eastern United States because of its 360-degree view and the rock-scramble section.
The most common route is a loop of about 15 km. The first part climbs through forest; then there is a roughly 1.5 km stretch among rock boulders, with narrow passages, jumps and simple climbs that require using your hands. The descent follows fire roads through the forest.
To control visitor numbers, the park requires a daily use permit in addition to park admission from March through November. Permits are sold online and often sell out on autumn weekends.
The trail does not start on Skyline Drive: it begins on the mountain’s east side, near the village of Etlan.
