About Luray Caverns

The Luray Caverns were discovered in 1878 by valley residents who were tracing the source of a cold air current coming from the ground. Visits began soon after, and today the caverns welcome visitors year-round on a guided route of about 2 km through high-ceilinged halls.

The limestone formations include stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and stone draperies. In one of the chambers, Dream Lake, a shallow sheet of water reflects the ceiling like a mirror and creates an impression of depth.

The Great Stalacpipe Organ, installed in the 1950s, uses rubber mallets linked to a keyboard to strike stalactites of various sizes and produce musical notes. A melody plays during the tour.

The temperature inside the caverns is about 12 °C in all seasons. The admission also includes a museum of vintage cars and carriages and other attractions next to the entrance.
