About Jefferson Rock and Appalachian Trail
In 1783, Thomas Jefferson passed through Harpers Ferry and wrote that the view of the river confluence was worth a journey across the Atlantic. The rock where he is said to have stopped, Jefferson Rock, sits on a slope above the lower town, overlooking the Shenandoah River and the mountains.
The path up there climbs stone steps from High Street, passing the 19th‑century Catholic church of Saint Peter and the ruins of the Episcopal church of Saint John. The route is part of the Appalachian Trail, the roughly 3,500‑km long‑distance trail between Georgia and Maine.
Harpers Ferry is considered the symbolic midpoint of the trail, and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters, in the upper town, welcomes hikers and has a small information center.
From Jefferson Rock the trail continues to Harper Cemetery and the campus of the former Storer College, atop the town.
