About 6th Street
Sixth Street is the best-known street for nightlife in Austin, downtown, a few blocks from the capitol. The stretch between Congress Avenue and Highway 35 has dozens of bars, clubs and live-music stages in late-19th-century brick buildings, part of a historic district.
On weekends the central section closes to cars at night and becomes a pedestrian promenade, with people moving between bars where rock, blues, country and other styles play. East of the highway, East Sixth has smaller bars and a more local crowd, and nearby Red River Street concentrates independent-music venues.
The street is part of Austin’s image as the live music capital and hosts part of the programming for the city’s major festivals.
