About Texas State Capitol

The Texas State Capitol was completed in 1888, built of pink-red granite quarried in the state itself, atop the hill in downtown Austin. In a Renaissance style, it has a dome topped by the Goddess of Liberty and is taller than the United States Capitol in Washington.

Inside, the rotunda floor features the seals of the six nations that governed Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy and the United States. The Senate and House chambers occupy the wings, and portraits of governors rise up the rotunda walls. An underground expansion with a glass ceiling houses offices and cafés.

The capitol grounds have monuments and large trees, and Congress Avenue runs downhill from the building to the river.
