About Temple Square
Temple Square is the block where Mormon pioneers began to build the city in 1847 and the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the center is the Salt Lake Temple, made of gray granite, with six spires, built over 40 years and dedicated in 1893. The temple underwent a long restoration and seismic strengthening; entry to the temple itself is reserved for church members, but publicly announced visiting periods are sometimes available.
Next to it is the Tabernacle, an oval wooden-roofed building known for its acoustics, where the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square performs. Choir rehearsals and broadcasts are often open to the public. The square also contains the Assembly Hall, seasonal flower gardens and the visitors’ center, with exhibits about the faith and the pioneers’ history.
On the adjacent block, the Family History Library is one of the world’s largest genealogy libraries and charges no fee for those researching their ancestors. Volunteer missionaries, many of whom speak multiple languages, offer tours of the square.
At the end of the year, Temple Square is often decorated with Christmas lights.
