About Utah State Capitol
The Utah State Capitol was completed in 1916 atop Capitol Hill, north of downtown Salt Lake City. The granite building, in neoclassical style, has a copper dome and houses the state government and legislature.
Inside, the rotunda under the dome is decorated with murals that tell Utah’s story, from the arrival of explorers and pioneers to work in the mines and on the railroads. The golden reception hall, the Supreme Court chamber and the galleries of the legislative chambers can be seen on the free or guided tour. The building underwent major seismic retrofitting in the early 21st century, with base isolators.
From the front steps you get views of Temple Square, downtown and the valley, with the mountains beyond. The surrounding park has trees, monuments and, in spring, blooming cherry trees.
The neighborhood around it, Marmalade, preserves 19th-century pioneer houses on the steep streets of the hill.
