About Antelope Island State Park
Antelope Island is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake and is entirely a state park, connected to the mainland by a causeway of about 11 km. The lake is what remains of a huge Ice Age lake, Lake Bonneville, and its water is several times saltier than the sea, which makes your body float easily.
The island has a herd of bison, brought there in 1893, as well as pronghorns, deer and bighorn sheep, which are often seen in the fields and along the roads. In spring and fall, millions of migratory birds stop along the lake’s shores, making the island one of the most popular birdwatching spots in the West.
In the north of the island are Bridger Bay Beach, the visitor center and trails to overlooks over the lake, such as Buffalo Point. On the east side, the Fielding Garr Ranch, an 1848 ranch, shows the life of the first settlers.
In dry years the lake recedes, and the water can be hundreds of meters from the sand. At certain times, mosquitoes and lake midges can be a nuisance.
