About International Rose Test Garden

The International Rose Test Garden is in Washington Park on the hills west of downtown. It was established in 1917 to trial new rose varieties and is one of the oldest continuously operating rose test gardens in the United States. The beds step down the slope in terraces, with paths winding through the roses.

The garden contains thousands of rose bushes of hundreds of varieties, organized into test beds, a garden of award-winning roses, and a grassy amphitheater. Signs identify the varieties. From the top terraces you can see downtown and, when the sky is clear, Mount Hood.

There is no admission fee. The Japanese Garden is a short walk uphill and the two are often visited together. Portland is nicknamed the City of Roses, and the city’s annual festival in June features parades and rose‑related events.
