About Vista House (Crown Point)
Vista House sits on Crown Point, a basalt promontory about 200 meters above the Columbia River at the west entrance to the gorge. The octagonal stone building with a copper dome was built between 1916 and 1918 as a rest stop for travelers on the then-new Historic Columbia River Highway.
From the terrace, the view stretches for kilometers along the gorge, with the wide river, forested slopes and, on the Washington side, the rock cliffs. Inside there are exhibits about the construction of the highway and the region’s geology, a shop and a café.
Crown Point is part of a state park. Wind is often strong on the promontory, especially in winter, and the building has its own opening schedule; the exterior overlook is accessible even when the interior is closed.
