About Multnomah Falls
Multnomah Falls plunges off a basalt cliff on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, about 50 km from Portland. At roughly 190 meters high, combining both drops, it is the tallest waterfall in the state and one of the most visited in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. It is fed by springs and usually has water year-round.
The stone Benson Bridge, built in 1914, spans the falls between the two drops and is the most famous photo spot. A paved trail climbs from the base to the top of the waterfall, with an overlook over the gorge. At the base, a 1920s stone building houses a visitor center and a restaurant.
The waterfall is part of a corridor of falls along the Historic Columbia River Highway, including Latourell, Bridal Veil, Wahkeena and Horsetail. The area is managed as a National Scenic Area by the Forest Service.
