About Mount Hood
Mount Hood is a volcano in the Cascade Range, 3,429 meters high and the highest point in Oregon. Its snowy cone appears on the horizon from Portland and Hood River. It is considered dormant, and glaciers cover the upper part.
The mountain sits in a national forest, with roads that circle the volcano and lead to trails, lakes and viewpoints. Trillium Lake and Mirror Lake reflect the volcanic cone on calm days, and the Timberline Trail circumnavigates the mountain for multiday hikers. On the south slope, a 1930s stone-and-wood building built by a federal work program is a national historic landmark.
In winter, several ski areas operate on the mountain, and the high elevations often retain snow into early summer. Roads that circle the volcano may require tire chains in winter, and some accesses close with snowfall.
