About Portland Museum of Art
The Portland Museum of Art was founded in 1882 and is Maine’s oldest and largest public art institution. It occupies three buildings in Congress Square downtown: an 1801 merchant family house, a 1911 building and the main 1983 building designed by I. M. Pei’s firm, with brick arches on the façade.
The collection includes American art from the 18th to the 21st centuries, with emphasis on artists who painted Maine. Winslow Homer, who lived and painted in Prouts Neck a few miles from the city, has one of the largest single-artist collections in one museum. Works by Andrew Wyeth, Marsden Hartley and Rockwell Kent are also on display.
The European collection includes Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, and there are rooms of decorative arts and contemporary art. Temporary exhibitions occupy parts of the galleries throughout the year.
The museum manages Winslow Homer’s studio in Prouts Neck, which can be visited in small groups at certain times by reservation made through the museum.
