About Perkins Cove Drawbridge
Perkins Cove is a sheltered cove at the southern tip of Ogunquit, where the Josias River meets the sea. Lobster and fishing boats have used the harbor for generations, and many still leave from here to retrieve their traps. The old wooden fishing shacks have become shops, galleries, and seafood restaurants.
The symbol of the place is the wooden, two-leaf pedestrian drawbridge that crosses the cove entrance. It is raised to let mastboats pass, and anyone can operate the mechanism when a boat needs to pass, following the posted instructions.
In the early 20th century, artists from the Ogunquit colony had studios in the cove’s shacks. A short walk away is the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, with works by artists who worked in the region, on grounds with a garden and sea views.
From the pier, lobster fishing boats take visitors to watch trap retrievals, and there are also coastal sightseeing and sport-fishing trips.
