About Ogunquit Beach
Ogunquit Beach occupies a narrow band of dunes and fine, light sand, about 2.4 km long, between the Atlantic and the Ogunquit River. At high tide the river forms a calm arm of water behind the beach, favored by families with children; on the ocean side, waves are larger and the water colder.
The southern end, called Main Beach, sits by the village center and has parking, restrooms and lifeguards in summer. To the north the beach continues as Footbridge Beach, reached by a pedestrian bridge over the river, and extends to the Wells town line, with fewer people.
The wide sand and open sea attracted painters in the late 19th century, when the village became an artists’ colony. The dunes are protected and may only be crossed at marked access points.
Water temperature is usually between 15 °C and 20 °C at the height of summer. On hot days the beach fills up by late morning.
