About Dock Square

Dock Square is the heart of Kennebunkport, on the Kennebunk River, about 1.5 km from the ocean. In the 19th century the village lived from wooden shipbuilding and maritime trade; shipyards lined the riverbanks, and captains built the white houses with black shutters that still stand on the surrounding streets.

The square is a small triangle surrounded by two-story wooden buildings, now home to gift shops, clothing and home-decor stores, art galleries and restaurants. The bridge crossing the river connects Kennebunkport to Kennebunk, the neighboring town, and fishing boats, tour boats and schooners depart from the dock into the bay.

The streets rising from the square, like Maine Street and Pleasant Street, form the historic district, with white churches, Federal-style houses and gardens. On foot you can also reach the riverbanks and Ocean Avenue, which heads toward the sea.

In early December the village holds its year-end celebration, with lights in Dock Square, a tree decorated with lobster buoys and street events.
