About Point State Park

Point State Park occupies the tip of Pittsburgh’s downtown triangle, exactly where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio River. Because of this strategic spot, the French and British contested the area in the 18th century, building Fort Duquesne and later Fort Pitt.

The park was created from the 1950s onward, when warehouses and rail tracks in the area were removed. At the tip stands a large fountain that shoots a plume of water over the river confluence and is one of the city’s symbols. Lawns and the riverside promenade are used for walking, running and festivals.

The outline of Fort Pitt’s walls is marked on the ground, and the Fort Pitt Museum, in a reconstructed bastion, tells the story of the war between the French and British and the Indigenous peoples of the region. Nearby, the Fort Pitt Block House, built in 1764, is considered the oldest building in the city.

From the park you can see Mount Washington across the Monongahela, with the funiculars climbing the slope.
