About Phipps Conservatory
Phipps Conservatory was donated to the city in 1893 by Henry Phipps, Andrew Carnegie’s partner in the steel business. The glass-and-iron greenhouse, in Victorian style, stands at the entrance to Schenley Park in Oakland and is one of the oldest of its kind in the United States.
The route passes through a sequence of rooms with palms, ferns, orchids, cacti, tropical plants, and a Japanese bonsai garden. Several rooms change their displays each season, with flower exhibitions in spring, summer, fall, and at Christmas.
Next to the original greenhouse, newer buildings were constructed using energy-efficient techniques, including an education center and an indoor rainforest. The outdoor gardens have aquatic plants and areas for children.
Schenley Park around it has trails, a lake, and views over the Oakland neighborhood.
