About Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History

Steel magnate Andrew Carnegie opened a large building in Oakland in 1895 containing a library, concert hall, and museums. The Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History operate side by side there, with a single admission.

The art museum has European and American paintings, contemporary art, and the Hall of Architecture, a huge room with plaster casts of facades and portals of famous buildings. Since the late 19th century it has organized the Carnegie International, one of the world’s oldest contemporary art exhibitions, which occupies the galleries and other spaces around the city.

The natural history museum is known for its dinosaur collection, with assembled skeletons like a Tyrannosaurus rex and Diplodocus carnegii, named in honor of the founder. There are also mineral and gemstone galleries, North American wildlife exhibits, and displays on Indigenous cultures.

The building sits next to the University of Pittsburgh, the Cathedral of Learning, and Schenley Park, where the Phipps Conservatory greenhouse is located.
