About Senator John Heinz History Center

The Senator John Heinz History Center occupies a brick warehouse from 1898 in the Strip District, the former wholesale market neighborhood on the banks of the Allegheny River. It is the state’s largest history museum and is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution.

The exhibits tell the story of western Pennsylvania, from Indigenous peoples and colonial conflicts to the era of steel, glass, and the major companies founded in the city, such as Heinz, known for sauces and preserves. There are historic streetcar exhibits, cars, and reconstructed street scenes.

One of the most sought-after rooms gathers sets and puppets from the children’s program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, which was recorded in Pittsburgh. The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, in the same building, presents the history of the city’s football, baseball, and hockey teams.

The surrounding Strip District has markets, food shops, and restaurants, and is especially lively on Saturday mornings.
