About Fallingwater

Fallingwater was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 for Edgar and Liliane Kaufmann, owners of a department store in Pittsburgh, and was built between 1936 and 1939 as a weekend house. Instead of placing the house facing the waterfall on Bear Run, Wright anchored it on the rocks of the falls, with cantilevered concrete terraces that project over the water.

Inside, the house mixes local stone, concrete, glass and wood, with fireplaces set on the original rock and windows that open onto the forest. The family donated the house, along with its furniture and art collection, to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963, and it opened to the public the following year.

In 2019, Fallingwater was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with other works by Wright. A multi-year conservation project strengthened the structure and the waterproofing.

Visits are always guided and require a scheduled time. After the tour, a short trail leads to the viewpoint with the classic view of the house above the waterfall.
