About North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is one of the state-run aquariums along the coast. It is near the lagoon shore on Roanoke Island and showcases the region’s aquatic environments, from rivers and freshwater swamps to the open ocean.
The highlight is the large tank that recreates the wreck of a World War II ship, with sharks, rays and schools of fish around it, recalling the Outer Banks’ reputation as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Other tanks house alligators, river otters, jellyfish and turtles.
The aquarium participates in the rescue and rehabilitation of sea turtles stranded on the coast, and part of that work can be observed by visitors.
There are touch tanks and keeper-led programs throughout the day, aimed especially at children.
