About Thurmond

Thurmond began in the late 19th century alongside the railroad that descended the New River canyon to carry coal from the mines. In the early 20th century it was one of the region’s busiest towns, with banks, hotels, and a heavy flow of passengers and freight.

With the end of steam locomotives and the decline of the mines, the town emptied. Today few residents remain, and the main street facing the tracks still has brick facades of period banks and shops, visible from the other side of the line.

The 1904 station was restored by the National Park Service and operates as a visitor center in season, with exhibits about the railroad and coal. Freight trains still run on the tracks, and long-distance passenger trains stop there a few times a week.

The road to Thurmond descends the canyon in narrow curves. Along the way, signs and overlooks show the remains of former mining communities.
