About Sandstone Falls

Sandstone Falls are in the southern part of the park, near Hinton, where the New River cuts through a band of hard rock and forms a broad, low waterfall about 450 meters bank to bank. The water drops over several sandstone steps, among islands covered in vegetation.

A wooden boardwalk and short bridges lead to the islets in the middle of the river, with viewpoints over the falls. The area is a spot for fishing and birdwatching, and the islands shelter rare plants.

The road that follows the riverbank to the falls is narrow and passes small rural properties; the Sandstone visitor center, near I-64, has exhibits about the river basin and operates seasonally.

The water volume varies considerably through the year: it is usually higher in spring and lower at the end of summer.
