About Babcock State Park
Babcock State Park lies east of the New River Gorge, in an area of forests, streams and trails. It was created in the 1930s with work by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built cabins and stone-and-wood buildings still in use.
The most photographed spot is the Glade Creek Grist Mill, a wooden mill assembled in 1976 on the banks of Glade Creek, using parts salvaged from old West Virginia mills. The waterwheel turns over the rapids, and the mill grinds corn, sold at the park shop.
The park has woodland trails, a small lake, picnic areas, cabins and camping. Nearby secondary roads lead to viewpoints over the gorge.
In autumn, the trees around the mill take on vivid colors, and the season draws photographers from the whole region.
