About The Parthenon
Nashville’s Parthenon was built for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition in 1897, when the city was nicknamed the Athens of the South for its schools. The original building, made of temporary materials, was rebuilt in concrete and completed in 1931, at the same dimensions as the Greek temple.
Inside, the main gallery houses the statue of Athena made by sculptor Alan LeQuire and unveiled in 1990; it is 12.8 meters tall and covered in gold leaf, as the original is believed to have been. On the ground floor, an art gallery displays American paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries and hosts temporary exhibitions.
Centennial Park around it has a lake, lawns and trails, and hosts outdoor concerts in summer.
