About Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave formed over millions of years by water acting on layers of limestone, under a covering of sandstone that protected the passages. More than 680 km have been mapped, and exploration continues. The national park was created in 1941 and listed by UNESCO in 1981.

Guided tours range from one to six hours and from easy to difficult. The Historic Tour enters through the cave’s natural mouth and passes through chambers used for saltpeter mining in the early 19th century. The Domes and Dripstones Tour showcases stalactite and stalagmite formations. There are flashlight tours and crawl passages for those seeking adventure.

On the surface, trails run through forest and reach the Green River, where canoeing is possible. The visitor center has exhibits on the cave’s geology and history.
