About Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore National Memorial displays the carved faces of four United States presidents on the granite of a mountain in the Black Hills: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, each about 18 meters tall. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum led the project from 1927 to 1941 with roughly 400 workers who used dynamite and drills to remove most of the rock.
A Avenue of Flags, featuring the state flags, leads to the observation terrace. The Presidential Trail, a short trail with steps, brings you closer to the base of the sculptures, and the sculptor’s studio preserves the original scale model. In summer, an evening ceremony in the amphitheater ends with the illumination of the faces.
The mountain lies on land considered sacred by the Lakota peoples, and the visitor center also addresses that history.
