About 1880 Train
The 1880 Train is operated by the Black Hills Central Railroad on a stretch of track built in the late 19th century to serve the region’s mines. Since the 1950s, steam locomotives have pulled vintage cars between Keystone and Hill City on a roughly 32 km round trip.
The outbound trip takes about an hour and climbs and descends through pine forests, streams and old gold-mining areas, with steep grades for a steam train. The conductor narrates the railroad’s history and the Black Hills gold rush. In Hill City, a small railroad museum displays locomotives and period artifacts.
The train runs from spring through fall, with special rides on certain dates.
