About Stone Arch Bridge and Saint Anthony Falls

The Stone Arch Bridge was built in 1883 by railroad entrepreneur James J. Hill to bring trains to downtown Minneapolis. Constructed of granite and limestone, it is roughly 640 meters long with 23 arches and a curve at the west end. The last trains ran in the 1970s, and the bridge was converted for pedestrians and cyclists.

From the middle of the bridge you can see Saint Anthony Falls up close, the only major natural waterfall on the Mississippi, now covered by a concrete apron that protects the limestone riverbed, and the lock that allowed boats to move up the river. Mill Ruins Park on the west bank shows the foundations of the old mills and canals.

On the east bank, the St. Anthony Main neighborhood has cobblestone streets and restaurants with views of downtown. In June the Stone Arch Bridge Festival brings together artists and musicians.
