About Chain of Lakes
The Chain of Lakes is a series of lakes in southwest Minneapolis, surrounded by public parks and linked by channels and trails. The main ones are Bde Maka Ska, the largest, with beaches and boat rentals; Lake of the Isles, with islands and mansions along its shores; Cedar Lake; and Lake Harriet, which has a waterside bandstand.
Separate pedestrian and bike paths circle the lakes and are part of the Grand Rounds, a park circuit of about 80 km that loops around the city. In summer there are kayak, paddleboard and bike rentals, and the Lake Harriet bandstand hosts outdoor concerts.
In winter, when the lakes freeze, there is ice skating, cross-country skiing and, on certain dates, ice festivals.
