About Durango Main Avenue Historic District
Main Avenue is the spine of Durango’s historic downtown, founded by the railroad in 1880 to serve the mines of the San Juan Mountains. The brick and stone buildings, with two- and three-story facades, house shops, galleries, bars and restaurants, and the historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The street begins at the train station and runs north, with plaques on buildings recounting stories from the miners’ and cowboys’ era. The town also has Southwest art galleries and craft shops of the native peoples of the region.
A few blocks away the Animas River crosses the town, accompanied by a walking and biking trail.
