About Cliff Palace
Cliff Palace is the largest of the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde, built into a large overhang on the canyon wall called Cliff. It was constructed in the 13th century by the ancestral Pueblo peoples and has about 150 rooms, 23 kivas, and stone towers, where between one hundred and one hundred fifty people lived.
Visits are led by a park ranger in groups, down wooden ladders and stone steps to the dwelling and back up the slope. The ranger explains the construction, daily life of the residents, and the connection with present-day Pueblo peoples. From the overlook on the Cliff Palace Loop drive, the dwelling can be seen from above without a guided tour.
Balcony House, also on the Cliff Palace Loop, offers a more adventurous guided tour with tall ladders and a narrow tunnel.
