About Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is state-run and houses one of the largest collections of railroad equipment in the United States. Pennsylvania was the birthplace of the Pennsylvania Railroad, one of the world’s largest rail companies, and much of the collection comes from it.
In the main shed are steam, electric and diesel locomotives, deluxe passenger cars, mail cars and freight cars, from the 19th century through the second half of the 20th century. Elevated platforms let you view the machines from above, and some cabs and cars can be visited inside.
In the outdoor yard there are other pieces from the collection and the restoration shop, which can be observed on certain days. Exhibits tell the story of railroad workers and the expansion of railroads across the country.
The museum sits opposite the Strasburg Rail Road station, and the whistles of the steam trains can be heard from the yard.
