About Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum began with the collection of two brothers, Henry and George Landis, who in the 1920s started preserving tools, furniture and objects from the rural life of Pennsylvania German immigrants, known as Pennsylvania Dutch. Today the museum is state-run.

The site brings together more than a dozen historic structures, including houses, a tavern, a school, a smithy, a tinsmith’s shop and barns. On programmed days, guides and craftsmen in period clothing demonstrate trades, cooking and farm work.

The plant gardens and the breeds of animals kept at the museum are the same as in that era, and there is an area devoted to preserving traditional seeds.

The museum helps explain the origins of the county’s rural communities, including the Amish and the Mennonites, independently of inhabited farms.
