About Gettysburg National Military Park

The Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1 to 3, 1863, between the Union Army of the North and the Confederate army led by General Robert E. Lee, who had invaded Pennsylvania. With tens of thousands killed, wounded, and missing, it was the largest battle of the Civil War and marked the end of the Confederate offensive into the North.

The national military park preserves much of the battlefield terrain: hills such as Little Round Top and Culp’s Hill, the crest of Cemetery Ridge, the fields of Pickett’s Charge, woods, fences, and farms. There are more than a thousand monuments, plaques, and cannon, many erected by the states that fielded regiments at the battle, such as the large Pennsylvania Memorial.

A signed driving tour, with numbered stops, follows the sequence of the three days of fighting. Licensed guides lead visits in the visitor’s car, and local operators run bus, bicycle, and horseback tours.

Some sections may close temporarily for conservation work. The park does not charge an entrance fee for the battlefield.
